Afterthoughts: Double Identity

It wouldn’t be my world without you in it” ~ Blair Waldorf. The quote of the week :)

Well color me confused… After last week’s mediocre season premiere, I was pleasantly surprised at this week’s episode. I expected to be sorely let down and somewhat annoyed this week (go figure, I have absolutely no faith in these writers). But hey, Gossip Girl does have a tendency to surprise. Sometimes in really good way such as this weeks.

And after the disclaimer early, I feel really great :) Yay!

Onward with these thoughts of mine:

Serena/Blair and I’ll added Lily just for kicks: Once again the episode opens up in Paris, with surprise, surprise Blair and Serena. There’s apparently not much going on in Paris as a mid-August, and I’m wondering what our favorite girl are still doing there. Hell I’m still wondering what Gossip Girl still doing there. The girls aren’t doing much, they’re basically having a good time before they have to depart and go back to UES. Where Serena still is mooning over Dan and Nate. Apparently the entire UES (and UWS), have nothing to do all summer and have a poll on who Serena should end up with. I personally believe she’s worn those boys out and needs to more on to frat boys!

No, all kidding aside… I said I was done with Serena her messy love fest. I mean Dan, Nate, Dan, Nate, Aaron anyone? No? How about Gabriel? Oh Dead Pete? Oh wait he’s dead. Bummer. Oh I did hear there’s a new guy in her life… there’s something right?

Meanwhile, Blair’s still trying to be royalty (mind you she did mess up her date with Prince Louis yesterday in GG time). But all is forgiven, because Blair tries a new approach to this whole royalty thing. And it must have work rather well concerning that she screw up badly if you remember. So with a few nice words and humility Prince Louis takes her back and Blair well on her way to becoming the new Princess Diana. For some odd reason I don’t see that happening. Can anyone see that happening?

Any who, Blair got a date with destiny and can’t miss her date with the hot French man, leaving Serena all by herself. That is until Lily calls! All together now: *Gasp* Lily, then delivers the news to Serena that Chuck might d-e-a-d. *Gasp again* You know this would more surprising if we didn’t already know this. Just saying. Another thing, I didn’t know if Serena was upset because of her choice in outfit or Chuck being dead or having to break the news to B. It was a three way tie the way I saw things.

Then off to the morgue Serena goes… she discovers three things: One: A wallet, Two: Change outfits immediately and Three: That’s not Chuck’s… More will be revealed after this commercial break. :D Just kidding.

Blair and Chuck will have their own min-section therefore I will talk about it then. XD

After her trip to the morgue, Serena decides her next step is to tell Blair, but not before telling Lily. Serena’s just awful at breaking the news to anyone. Like she’s not really easing into things she just says it and wait to see what happens. Or she remains silent until it blows up in her face. Either way someone’s got to give her tips on delivering bad news. I heard Stephanie Savage knows how to deliver upsetting news, maybe she should ask her.

But as Serena was telling Blair about the morgue, Blair bushes it off and tells Serena that Chuck is stalking her. Which makes me wonder, what the hell is Blair on? Like she hasn’t seen… I’m gonna hold off on Chuck and Blair mention, ok? But anyways Blair’s not hearing it. Serena decides to play Nancy Drew because apparently Serena’s all about finding clues.

After Serena’s outing she return to find B. is the most amazing dress (really it is quite beautiful). Serena bring up Chuck again and Blair still pretending to be deaf to the ear. After all she has more pressing issues to attend to (a ball perhaps). Serena then receives an envelope with money… No, it’s all the deeds to the Empire Hotel. Yeah, that same hotel that Chuck… I’m getting to that section soon. Promise. The Paris episode just got to the good part.

So while Serena playing Nancy, Blair wait patiently until a chuffer comes. I think for a split second she thinks this another hoax from the Princes. The driver takes her to Harry Winston. And by this point you should all be very excited. Wait for it… while Blair’s at HW she see a ring. *nods* Yes, that ring. Serena and a real detective inform her that is Chuck’s ring… to her. Again this would be more surprising if we didn’t already know this.

But no matter Serena has finally convinced Blair to go after Chuck. After all she doesn’t have to forgive him completely.

…………..

Serena finally heads off home the next day and Blair has asked her the question of a lifetime: Dan or Nate? Lord behold, she doesn’t get a chance to decide because they’re without people. Sighs. Blair finishing off her own fairy tale decides to return to the UES Princes-less and shoeless.

Blair/Louis: So I’m filling in the missing blanks. Blair and Louis date doesn’t leave much to the imagination. While Louie was adorable, you kind have to admit he was kind of bland. Plus, Blair was like changing her personality to get a guy to like her. Did anyone else see that or was that just me? Then there was the invite to the ball, how very Cinderella of him (you’ll see). So, while Blair gets ready for the ball, she kind of got other things in her mind *coughChuckcough*

To be honest, Blair doesn’t make to the ball *sad face* instead she skips out due to some business she has to settle. I kind of feel bad for the guy, he never stood chance. All he got from this relationship was a shoe that is worth more than a glass slipper. When he did get a kiss so that’s something.

Serena, Chuck (Henry Prince), and Newbie (Eva/Whore): Following the morgue scene it cuts to “Henry” and Eva. Did anyone notice the eerie music right before goring to their scene in bed together? I just thought this was funny.

So getting through this scene was difficult. First, I realized this girl has about as much personality as Lord Marcus and Aaron put together. Yeah, I went there. I mean she was a nice girl, who was just so flat. And yes, maybe I’m being harsh on “Henry’s” lover or whatever, but that girl’s acting was flat.

Then I heard something that should give a big warning signs that something is wrong with this girl: She found him in an ally at nearly 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning by whore-house. The word ‘obvious’ is ringing a small bell right about now.

So “Henry” off to work, but not before seeing the ghost of girlfriends past.

And right around this time, he’s kind of wishing that he hadn’t chosen Paris for a quick getaway considering that Harold, Roman, Eleanor, and Cyrus all live there. Just saying. And he tells Eva that. Not the ex-girlfriend’s parents are in the same city, that maybe they should live. With what money she ask. Oh sweetie haven’t you heard Henry Prince is loaded.

Serena finally finds him after searching every bar in Paris… So I somehow doubt that. Stretching the imagination if you will. She finds him and he promptly shuts the door in her face. But Serena never one to give up and waits for Chuck. Chuck reveals his master plan to run away for good. Hey when the going gets tough you run as fast as your shoes can carry you. After tomorrow there will be no Chuck Bass. That’s just sad.

But no matter, Serena’s got a plan! And it involves our Queen B, and running passed a very flat Eva. What shocks me is that Serena’s plan actually works.

Because Chuck is on his way home with this main squeeze. And he’s finally utter those three word that we have been wanting to hear: “I’m Chuck Bass.” Lol You didn’t honestly think he’d say the other three words to Ms. Flat did you?

Chuck and Blair: Do you ever have that feeling that you’re holding your breath and waiting for something, or anything to happen?

If you’ve answered ‘yes’ then continue reading and if you’ve answered ‘no’ then re-watch CB scene over again (highly recommend it even if you’ve answered ‘yes’ *thumbs up*)

Everything from the “Paris Episodes’ has lead up to this. The reunion of our C and B. The episode goes out them and their two scenes.

The first one was the car scene where Blair is in the car and turns and sees a very much alive Chuck. Of course she doesn’t know it at the time, that he has been shot and the muggers. But she trying so hard t to let him get to her.

When she does learn the true… She cancels her ball plans and runs after Chuck (and passed Eva). This is the scene, which literally needed no words. And had me in tears. The music, the dialogue, the tears that form in both their eyes, the long pause… This scene in particular made the wait worthwhile. I mean I may hate Josh and CO. but this scene gives me hope.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say this was CB at their best because they do eventually tear apart. And Blair says something that broke my CB heart: “I don’t love you anymore” Liar. And “It wouldn’t be my world without you in it.” Seriously Kleenex right here.

Nobody can quite pull off an emotional scene like these two.

Rily: Rufus *facepalm* I’m done with you, like GTFO of my screen and back on a tour bus. Like He acts like Jenny a saint, and poor Milo like this is his fault. Rufus your son sign the damn certificate live with it. Lily was actually pretty awesome in the episode. She even gave Milo his own room. Aww… Georgie’s gone, but it’s only been a day since the revelation. Wow, the day on GG are going by rather quickly.

Nate/Juliet/Dan/Vanessa/Milo: I just put all of these guys together because they all their SL pretty much ran together. Plus it was again one of those plot I was half paying attention to, this time I really was zoning in  and out.

We start out with Juliet and Nate, who have been talking for about 7 hours on Serena van der Woodsen. Really 7 hours? Dear lord, what the hell you talking about the whole synopsis for GG? Did you analyze, make chart, and color a pretty picture while you were at it? No person is not that interesting.

Then Juliet offers to be his life couch for 24 hours and to put it in simple terms: She’s pretty bad at it. But at least she’s funny. By the way the whole 24 hours reminds me of last season when Nate spent the whole day in bed with Bree Buckley (remember her?)

So Juliet manages to put Nate against Dan and Dan to sleep with Vanessa. Not bad for a good days work, right?

The whole who’s gonna be with Serena was bad. I just… Nate loves her alright, Dan love her, they should just have a three-way and get it over with. I don’t care. She actually looked like she was picking Dan though (Pay attention: A shoulder to cry on *hints*)

Btw someone get Hobo away from the baby… Like far away. Actually get her away from the cast.

Juliet is working for GOSSIP GIRL… If you believed me even for a slip second you weren’t paying attention.

Oh where’s Eric? Wasn’t he getting more screen time this season?

Time for some honesty guys, this wasn’t my finest recap (it’s actually cut really poorly) and it wasn’t supposed to be this long. I got carried away in the beginning. Next week I’ll make it better but for now I’m tired and will tried to corrected some it tomorrow :)

I am in love with this episode.I will keep watching it and I probably will never get bored.Chuck and Blair are amazing.Ed and Leighton are the best actors of the show and they proved it.They beated the most epic tv scenes and this is by far the most epic one.
İt was honest ,perfect ,emotional ,full of regret and bittersweet.
When Chuck and Blair are forefront on the episode ,it totally beats the others.Thats the truth.
I love how honestly Chuck opened his heart to Blair and talked full regression.Ed is very talented and make me live the moment with him.I almost felt his emotions and regression. He is perfect.
Blair was melting deeply and she tried so hard to not to take him back. She stood strong for herself.I loved the scene when she learnt that the sparkling ring was hers and Chuck was shot while trying hard to protect it.İt effected her deeply.İt was wonderful.
Chuck and Blair again proved that they are the heart and soul of the show. And they are destined.

I’m honestly confused with Juliet but I have a few guesses even though they’re probably wrong. She can’t be Gossip Girl but she definitely has something out for Serena…but after the phone conversation I don’t think it’s because she wants Nate for herself I think she just wants to destroy Serena.

B.O.B’s Ghost in a machine was I think the best song they have ever played on GG and fit PERFECTLY for the whole episode (maybe even the first one too). Blair’s line definitely goes back to Chuck’s not being able to be Chuck Bass without her. I think it gives a lot of hope. Chuck and Blair never get fair without each other and in the end they always find each other. Now we just have to figure out when the “end” is.

Theres a chair scene and all of a sudden its a good episode? Shocker.

    Anywho

I thought this weeks was meh. I preferred the premiere. I thought I was a great premiere to be honest. This weeks ep was kind of lame.

    • Yes, for me, this episode was wonderful. Just because of that scene. But to be fair, I only watch GG for CB, and maybe the fashion.

I was in tears by the end of the trainstation scene. And did anyone notice that both of them had tears in their eyes too? They killed me.

  8. I think the only good part of the first two episodes was the CB scene in the train station ♥

The storyline about Serena’s no-longer-existing-love-life is just boring (i agree with the post, she should move to new boys). And let’s not even begin to discuss Serena’s drastically poor wardrobe choices

Well, I can just say that Double Identity hit all the right notes for me. The season premiere was… eh, as compared to the pilot and S2 (3 was worse). Seems like 402 is kinda returning to what GG is all about.
The train station scene. I’m going to refer to it as that in homage to the limo scene and other epics. This evoked so much emotion. It had the absolutely perfect music. Perfect camera angles. The dialogue? Above my expectations, therefore extraordinary. Leighton and Ed are high-class, completely real actors. The best of an young TV show, in my opinion – truly great.
This proves how epic and exceptional C&B still are, no matter what I might have thought during S3. Yes, the scene was extremely bittersweet. Yet is showcased real acting, real dialogue, and real characters. Hopefully the writers can continue on this high note. I heard episode eight was even more epic as compared to this?
Oh thank God, Gossip Girl is back.

oh, one more thing. in my opinion, the train station scene was better than all the C&B scenes of S3 combined. It was mesmerizing. Gone were the fake lines (“I can’t deny our path has been complicated”… Really?) that made S3 so bad to me. My fav part of the scene is the “I don’t love you anymore.” the way Blair raises herself up and looks him in the eye, preparing herself to lie, is amazing. And the look on Chucks face brought me to tears. <3
    Anyone disagree? I love debates!

Hey guys…i just saw on spoiler tv that GG is in risk of being cancelled…i feel like crying right now!!! do you think its gonna happen? someone give me hope pleaseeeeee

    • It’s a strong possibly due to the terrible rating, it seems like the fans have been pulling away for some time (which goes to show you Creator/writers don’t always know best). Gossip Girl needs to reach out to it’s audience and listen. Josh did something unforgivable last season, and people just stopped caring.

At the rate this show is going it’s not surprising. Alarming, yes. Surprising, no.

It’s not the hope you were asking for and I’m sorry :’(

Maybe if Josh is removed from the picture and hands over his rights to Stephanie. Or maybe if we get writers who will deliver. Or maybe fans should come together and… Anything short of miracle is what we need now.

I don’t think that Eva’s a whore or something. I think she’s really nice, but… Chuck just belongs with Blair…

This was actually the first episode of GG I’ve ever watched. What luck! Totally hooked. I’ve gone back and watched the other episodes.

That said, I wasn’t as cynical about twist of events because I didn’t have spoilers in the back of my mind. I’ve realized from your synopsis that people really cheat themselves when they read spoilers. And I can claim this because I read too many spoilers now, too.

I’ve noticed something funny, too, about Chair fans – me included. Chair fans only live for the Chair moments. All of the other plotlines are never that interesting. That said, you actually cheat yourself of enjoying the rest of the episode when you view it through that angle. I agree that the other plotlines are rarely ever as interesting as Chuck & Blair. But it is necessary to surround a crown jewel with lesser, yet nevertheless quality, gems and you just need to sit through it and deal.

I wish the writers (or actors) were able to make plotlines that held up as well as Chuck & Blair. But given that they cannnot, I am of the opinion that for GG to have long-term ratings staying power, we all have to appreciate the bigger UES universe and other storyline arcs. Otherwise, we won’t be able to generate enough GG-interest to keep it going for more seasons. The entire viewing audience is unfortunately, not all Chair fans, and so we should also put our part in as a part of the team, and try to be supportive and appreciate of the arc of character development of the other characters, even though they are nowhere as interesting as Chuck & Blair’s.

I came to this conclusion after contrasting my critique of Goodbye, Columbia (which was pretty much in agreement with your assessment) with other reviews that really liked the Juliet-Serena-Vanessa storyline. I realized then, that, hey, “Goodbye Columbia” could be a somewhat redeemable episode, as long as you realize that the Chuck & Blair storyline was just not the focus of that episode. Much more time was spent on crafting the Juliet-Serena storyline. And after that realization, I was able to appreciate “Goodbye, Columbia” for what it was.
